Ich war bisher einmal in der Antarktis, im Jahr 2013 gemeinsam mit meiner Frau.
My wife and I went to Antarctica together in 2013.
Startpunkt war Ushuaia. Die Reise ging dann durch die auf der Hinfahrt ruhigen Drake Straße in Richtung Weddellmeer, Half Moon Island, Bransfieldstraße, Lemaire-Kanal bis zum südlichen Polarkreis. Bei der Rückfahrt hat dann die berüchtigte Drake Straße ihrem Namen alle Ehre gemacht (Drake Shake). Zwei Tage lang 12-15 Meter hohe Wellen haben den Speisesaal bis auf wenige Passagiere leergefegt. Zum Glück hielten wir dem Drake Shake Stand und wurden nicht seekrank.
The starting point was Ushuaia. The journey took us through the Drake Passage (Drake Lake), which was calm on the outward journey, in the direction of the Weddell Sea, Half Moon Island, Bransfield Strait, Lemaire Channel to the Antarctic Circle. On our way back, the notorious Drake Passage lived up to its name (Drake Shake). Two days of 12-15 metre tall waves all but emptied the dining room. Fortunately, we withstood Drake Shake and did not get seasick.
Wir fuhren durch eine faszinierende Landschaft mit einer genauso faszinierenden Tierwelt. Riesige Eisberge, flächige Treibeisfelder und unvorhersehbares Packeis gemischt mit einem Wettermix, der sich manchmal im Stunden- oder Minutentakt verändert hat, haben diese Reise zu einem echten Abenteuer gemacht. Obwohl man auf einem Schiff ist und Menschen um sich herum hat, fühlt man sich angesichts der „mächtigen Natur“ klein und hilflos. Beeindruckend ist auch die Anpassungsfähigkeit der Tier- und Pflanzenwelt an diese für uns Menschen so extreme Umgebung.
We sailed through a fascinating landscape with equally fascinating wildlife. Huge icebergs, flat drift ice fields, and unpredictable pack ice, combined with weather conditions that sometimes changed every hour or even minute, made this trip a real adventure. Despite being on a ship and having people around you, you feel small and helpless in the face of mighty mother nature. The adaptability of flora and fauna in this environment, which is so extreme for us humans, is extremely impressive.

I have added four pictures to this story. With these four pictures I would like to motivate you to look at the many pictures taken in Antarctica on my website. There are many iceberg pictures, landscape and animal pictures. At first you think the pictures are all the same, but look more closely to notice the constantly changing shapes, different structures and the changing light. Gloomy landscapes alternate with bright sunshine and impressive sunsets. Check out the waddling penguins and jumping dolphins.
